I've been to Passionflower twice now, and I've enjoyed it both times. My first Passionflower experience was a giant sampler plate called the "Spirited Away", which I just couldn't resist. It has green tea mousse, grass jelly, a banana crepe, miniature pancakes and three scoops of ice-cream; thai milk tea flavour, lychee and rose flavour and black sesame flavour. The pancakes and crepe were average, but the ice-cream was amazing, and the mousse was lovely. As for the grass jelly, I can't say I'm a fan; but my friend who actually enjoys the taste of grass jelly claims that Passionflower's version is really nice. On my second visit I tried the ice cream flavours of sticky rice, pandan and durian. The pandan was definitely the standout for me, and the sticky rice was really interesting. However, I discovered that I hate the taste of durian. It tastes like LPG gas. But that's the fault of the fruits, not the fine dessert institution that is Passionflower. All in all? A great place for a sugar fix.
I've lived here in Melbourne for well over a year and yet up until two weeks ago I had not yet tried Dessert Story. This franchise is everywhere over here; so I don't really know how I managed that. Anyhow, I gave it a try one night, and my feelings were mixed. I'm not a fussy eater; I try to be open minded, but a lot of the menu didn't at all appeal to me. Something about sweet potato pieces and tofu pudding just doesn't sit well with me in terms of dessert. Perhaps if I had have gone with the intention of dessert being its own meal, that would have been okay, but at the end of another restaurant feed I just couldn't commit to that heavy type of food. I ended up opting for the coconut sago with mango pulp and green tea ice-cream. I love sago, and all three of those flavours, so obviously the dessert was enjoyable for me. I'm curious to go back and try some more adventurous choices another day when I haven't just gorged myself silly on Thai food.
LA BELLE MIETTE
Yum. Yum. Yum.
By far the best macarons I have had; and they come in such a beautiful range of unique and interesting flavours. They're pretty and presented well, and the staff take time and care when serving you. I will definitely be buying more macarons from here in the future. I understand why it has such a brilliant reputation.
