A LITTLE BIRD TOLD ME...
A Little Bird Told Me... is hidden down on Little LaTrobe Street; which isn't exactly an equivalent of Degraves or Hardware or The Causeway, to say the least. When I decided to visit this place it was a grey and stormy day, I was wet, and stepping out of the bland and dank street of its location was quite the relief. The cafe is bright and spacious, but still manages to feel cosy. Maybe it was the friendliness of the barista, who put up with my umming and ahing, that helped me feel so at ease. I'm a waitress; I know how annoying that can be, especially when you're hours into your shift. He was great. The coffee was decent; a satisfying afternoon pick-me-up. There are other brews around the CBD that I think I prefer, but it was by no means of poor or even average quality. It has my tick of approval, and I'd go again if I was up that way more often.
PELLIGRINI'S ESPRESSO BAR
Pelligrini's was disappointing, to say the least. I don't usually pay much heed to customer service, but this place was ridiculous. When I walked in I was barked at by an old woman, when I responded that I wanted a strong soy cappuccino, very clearly, she turned to the barista and yelled "cappuccino", no mention of the soy. She then left before I could pay, before a rude younger woman came and snapped the price at me. I had to then tell the barista myself that I wanted a strong soy cappuccino, not a basic cappuccino, and at the end he forgot my chocolate, meaning I had to be annoying and remind him to put it on top.
The coffee was average; it had a very bitter after taste that I feel was a result of bad extraction, not the beans, and the soy was cheap, watery, and very hot. I still drank it all, because a) I really needed caffeine, and b) it wasn't as bad as others I've stomached.
All in all, I cannot fathom why Pellegrini's has a good reputation. I could understand the problems if they had been busy, but there weren't many customers.
Terrible service, less-than-average coffee.
No picture, as when I went to Cheeky Monkey, I had not slept in 49 hours and was slightly delirious as a result. Blogging was the last thing on my mind. But, it happened to be a lovely coffee, in a place that was cute with a cosy atmosphere. The guy that served me was sullen and dazed, but I try not to judge a place on its service. Besides, I myself was in zombie mode. Perhaps my need for caffeine clouded my judgement a little, but this place is pretty highly regarded and it was honestly a lovely cup of caffeinated goodness. Recommend.
